Attendance Policy

According to Ontario Ministry of Education-dictated attendance mandates, parents and students are responsible for regular attendance. Occasionally a student is absent from learning for reasons that are acceptable such as illness, medical appointments, family emergencies, or the death of family member or close friend. BITTS requests that students or parents send a note to their institution following an absence explaining the reason for the student absence.

As well, please note the following information regarding attendance:

  • Three or more days (or equivalent class periods) of excused absences within an educational year are considered excessive and may require a doctor’s note to further excuse subsequent absences.
  • After five or more days (or equivalent class periods) of unexcused absences within an educational year, the institution will mail the student/parents a truancy letter asking for the parent’s help with their student’s attendance and warning of consequences for further truancy. Please note that a student must be in attendance 4 (four) hours of a study days to receive credit for one full day of education completion.
  • After 10 days (or equivalent class periods) of unexcused absences within an educational year, the institution will mail the student and parents a truancy notice. The truancy notice requires the student and parents to appear at college. The institution may assess a truancy fine.
  • In addition, students with two or more unexcused absences may not receive their diploma and transcripts. BITTS College policy requires all students maintain 2.5 GPA to graduate from BITTS College. Excessive absences may jeopardize a student’s ability to graduate from BITTS.

Please check with the institution attendance specialist or administration head concerning the number of excused or unexcused absences that your student may have. Your cooperation is needed to help us provide quality education. If you have questions regarding this policy, please contact Mr. Harshal Gunde at 905-790-3940.
